The HCA program at NEC uses an Indigenous wellness model to prepare learners to become competent caregivers who provide evidence-based appropriate care for Elders, Indigenous families, and people with healthcare needs. This program allows individuals to work as front-line healthcare providers in various community and institutional settings. The program will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to function independently as healthcare workers and members of the healthcare team in a variety of settings with direction and supervision from regulated healthcare professionals
Successful completion of Grade 12 with a minimum of English 10 grade "C" or equivalent.

Minimum HCA Program Entry Requirements
Evidence of both of the following must be provided prior to acceptance:
1. Proof of Grade 10 completion (or equivalent)1 OR mature student status
2. Proof of meeting HCA Program Entry - English Language Competency Requirements
Accuplacer Reading 240, writing 240, and write placer 4.0
Upon acceptance to the school program, evidence of completion of the following must be in student files prior to the first practice education experience. All Evidence must be current and valid.

Graduates of the HCA program are eligible to register with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry and become a Certified Health Care Assistant. To learn more about this certification, please visit the BC Care Aide & Community Health Registry.

Upon completion of the Health Care Assistant Certificate, learners will be proficient in the following areas:
