Over the years, thousands of alumni have walked through our doors, carrying hopes, dreams, and resilience. - [Student challenge 2025](https://necvancouver.org/student-ambassador-initiative-2025/): Building Bridges Together | NEC Student Ambassador Initiative Education opens doors, and for many students, the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program and the Learning for Future Grant are life-changing. The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program waives tuition and eligible fees for current and former children and youth in care studying at B.C. public post-secondary schools, the Native Education College, and union-based trades training providers. The Learning for Future Grant provides an annual $3,500 grant (August–July) to help with costs not covered by tuition (like textbooks, computers, and supplies). These programs are here to help students succeed, and we’re inviting NEC students to act as Ambassadors to help us share this message with our extended community. How to Take Part To participate in the Building Bridges Together – Student Ambassador Initiative, follow these steps on the official NEC social media Ambassador post: Comment by sharing why you believe the Tuition Waiver Program is important. You might reflect on how it supports students, strengthens families, or opens doors to future opportunities in our community. Intentionally share this message by connecting with or inviting 10 family members or friends in your comment, people who should know about the Tuition Waiver Program and its impact. By inviting others into the conversation, you help extend awareness and act as an NEC Student Ambassador, building bridges between our community and the opportunities available through NEC. The first 50 students to complete these steps will receive a $100 gift card* as our thank-you. - [Adult Upgrading Grant Funding](https://necvancouver.org/adult-upgrading-grant/): Adult Upgrading Grant Funding Financial Aid and awards The Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG) provides financial support to low income Indigenous learners enrolled in Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, and Adult Special Education programs at British Columbia public post-secondary institutions. Financial support received from this grant is non-repayable, meaning students do not have to pay back the funding they receive. Indigenous Adult Basic Education “Not just education. It’s self-discovery. I know myself in a lot of ways I didn’t before.” What is covered under the Adult Upgrading Grant? This grant covers the costs associated with tuition, student fees, books, unsubsidized childcare and transportation for learners most in need of financial assistance. Am I eligible? You may be eligible if you meet all of the following: An adult Attending a public post-secondary institution in B.C. and enrolled in an approved Adult Basic Education, Adult Special Education, or English as a Second Language course  Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, protected person1  or BC resident Able to demonstrate your gross family income is below the level listed in sections six and seven How do I apply? NEC application is available online. If you filed a tax return, include a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessment (NOA) of the current year, for yourself, your spouse, or your parents, whichever applies. Acceptable documentation includes, but is not limited to, the following: • T4 Statement of Remuneration Paid • T1 General (LINE 15000) • T5007 Statement of Benefits • ROE Record of Employment • PAY STUB • T5 Statement of Investment Income • Letter from employer(s) confirming income amount. If you are unsure, contact the Financial Aid & Awards office to find out what is acceptable. Then submit your application  Which is the next step after I apply? We ensure that everything is complete. Check your email for details if your  AUG funding is approved, such as how to obtain your textbooks. You will need to purchase your own supplies, such as paper and pens.Do not pay any fees or buy textbooks. Refunds will not be granted.If you add a course, AUG will not automatically finance it. You must contact the Financial Aid & Awards office to include it on your grant application. Is the Adult Upgrade Grant a loan? No. It is a grant, therefore you do not have to pay it back. Can I receive the AUG if I am working or other financial support? Yes. However, students’ gross family income and the total of additional financial aids are required to determine what percentage you can get. Am I eligible to receive the AUG if my gross family income exceed the income? Students whose gross family income and other financial supports exceed the income threshold by up to 10% will be eligible to receive up to 50% of the tuition cost (other costs are not eligible).

Stay tuned!  Maps Online conversation Why does the NEC have to change its name? Our transition to a public post-secondary institute requires us to remove “College” from our name. This is a requirement set by the provincial government in order to carry out our transition from a local college into an institute with provincial reach.    You may feel uncomfortable about this change and understandably so. Names tell us who we are. They tell us who we belong to. - [NEC SCHOLARSHIPS](https://necvancouver.org/nec-scholarships/): Post-secondary education scholarships For Indigenous Peoples NEC offers scholarships for all post-secondary programs, excluding provincially funded ones, to help you acquire the skills and qualifications needed to confidently pursue your professional goals. Scholarships are available to new incoming students, while bursaries are offered to current students. Scholarships and bursaries are awarded and they do not need to be paid back. NEC Scholarships  NEC Bursaries The application requirements are as follows: 1. Applicant must self-declare as Indigenous (Status or Non-Status). 2. We do accept applicants who are mature students without a grade 12 diploma. Applicants can complete an English and Math assessment test to see what grade level you are at. Once completed, you can enrol into the Indigenous Adult Basic Education program to upgrade your English and Math skills. How do I get my transcripts from high schools? You can request your high school transcript from the Ministry of Education for a British Columbia graduation program if you were a student who: Graduated after 1985 British Columbia or Yukon Territory Completed a Grade 12 course after 1985 Attended Grade 12 prior to 1974 in the University Entrance or Academic-Technical Program My band won’t fund me, can I still attend NEC? A few of our programs do start in the Winter Term (January). Visit the programs page to find out which programs we are accepting applications. What is the required content for a reference letter? Reference letters are specified as either personal or professional depending on the program you apply for. Professional reference letters can be completed by someone you have worked or volunteered for and must come either directly from the contact person’s organizational email or signed and printed on the letterhead of the organization. They must outline the contributions you have given to the company/agency and highlight your suitability for the program. Personal or character reference letters can come from teachers, community members, etc. These letters outline your suitability for the program and can include details such as community involvement, dedication to studies, etc. Reference letters can be faxed, emailed, or handed in-person to Admissions. Please confirm the letter has been received by the Admissions department after you send it. Is NEC recognized by Canada Student Loans and Student Aid BC? Yes! Current and former BC secondary school students will need to provide their Personal Education Number (PEN) when applying to a post-secondary institution (PSI) Transcripts are maintained by the NEC  Registrar’s Office.  Transcripts can be ordered online and sent directly to the post-secondary institution to which you are applying.  Students will not be notified when the transcripts have been mailed by NEC. The NEC Community Learning Centre (CLC) is a place for NEC applicants, prospective students, and members of the community to come and access learning support, workshops, community events, and help with fundamental skills for success at school. The CLC features drop-in and scheduled mentoring opportunities, workshops, events, computers, and space for the community to access educational materials and activities without needing to enroll in an academic program. Support for Learners in the Community Many people feel anxiety about beginning their studies at post-secondary. The CLC is here to support people by offering workshops and mentoring on important studying skills and other topics, like procrastination, time management, and more. If you’re considering coming to NEC, visiting the CLC can be a good way to learn about some of the programs we offer and access some of the materials taught in our classes. Book a One-on-One Mentoring Session Need help studying or want to get feedback on your latest resume. At the CLC, you can meet with our Community Learning Centre Coordinator, a specialist in learning in memory, to improve your learning skills across a broad range of topics. Accuplacer What is Accuplacer?  Accuplacer is a computerized test that evaluates reading, writing, and math skills. It is used by many institutions for course placement. The test consists of multiple-choice questions, except for the WritePlacer essay, and adapts based on your answers. The College, then called the Native Education Centre, began as a project to meet the educational needs of Indigenous people who relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia from their rural First Nation communities. The overall objective was to provide Indigenous adult learners with the academic and life skills to secure employment and improve their quality of life. By 1979, NEC became a private college, operated and controlled by BC First Nations. NEC NOW Today the College provides a supportive learning environment, including cultural activities, which creates a connection to the Indigenous community of Metro Vancouver. We strive to meet workforce demands by delivering a variety of academic programs that are pathways to careers. Indigenous Adult Basic Education diploma aPPLY NOW Program Description The BC Adult Graduation Diploma (also known as the Adult Dogwood) program gives students high school completion, and prepares them for careers and post-secondary education. IABE is accredited by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and affiliated with Vancouver Community College (VCC). This program embodies an Indigenous perspective by offering Cultural Studies, Social Justice, and Creative Writing with Indigenous Approaches, including First Peoples English and First Nations Studies. All our English courses use literature by Indigenous authors to provide a cultural perspective and Indigenous worldview. Indigenous justice studies Certificate aPPLY NOW Program Description The Indigenous Justice Studies (IJS) prioritizes Indigenous laws and Indigenous Peoples while exploring topics related to crime and deviance, the criminal justice system, and the role of colonial law. Courses critically examine the various responsibilities of a system that strives to ensure safety and protection while learning about the oppression experienced by Indigenous Peoples and the role of Indigenous cultural approaches to healing from the impacts of genocide. What sets our program apart is the emphasis on applying this knowledge in real-world settings and culturally authentic teachings.
